📋 About the FSOT
The Foreign Service Officer Test (FSOT) is the first step in becoming a U.S. Foreign Service Officer (FSO), representing America's interests abroad through diplomacy. The FSOT is a computer-based exam covering job knowledge, English expression, biographic information, and an essay portion. Passing the FSOT leads to the Personal Narratives, Oral Assessment, and final review stages. Competition is intense—typically less than 3% of applicants ultimately receive offers. Foreign Service Officers serve in embassies and consulates worldwide in one of five 'cones': Consular, Economic, Management, Political, or Public Diplomacy.
