📋 About the TIMSS
TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) is a major international assessment measuring the mathematics and science achievement of 4th and 8th grade students worldwide. Conducted every four years since 1995 by the IEA (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement), TIMSS provides comprehensive data on educational trends, curriculum effectiveness, and learning environments across 60+ participating countries. Unlike PISA which focuses on applied knowledge, TIMSS assesses curriculum-based content knowledge and skills.

PISA tests 15-year-olds on applied knowledge (literacy, numeracy, scientific literacy). TIMSS tests Grades 4 and 8 on curriculum-based knowledge. PISA is run by OECD; TIMSS by IEA. Both are valuable but measure different things.
PIRLS is the IEA's reading literacy assessment for Grade 4, often conducted alongside TIMSS. Together they provide comprehensive Grade 4 assessment across reading, math, and science.
